Outcome of Phacoemulsification with torsional ultrasound
Augenklinik Groβraschen, Germany
Many of new phacotechnologies were developed in the last years worldwide. The new phacoemulsification system from Alcon Laboratories Inc., Fort Worth, Texas, delivers additional to the longitudinal a torsional ultrasound.
We investigated phacoemulsification procedures with longitudinal and additional torsional ultrasound technologies (Alcon phakomachines Legacy and Infinity).
Intra-operativ handling and complications, surgical clock time, post-operativ visual acuity and post-operativ healing time were reseached.
It could shown, that the addition of torsional ultrasound improves surgeon control and occlusion management by constantly repositioning material on the phakoemulsification tip. It also enhances cutting performance, allowing for lower energy production with a resultant lower risk for therminal injury and improved followability. Post-operativ healing time is shortened, post-operativ visual acuity better in addition with torsional ultrasound.
