SMILE Technology Results and Complications

St. Petersburg Branch of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, St. Petersburg
Purpose. To study a possibility of applying the ReLEx® SMILE technology in refractive surgery.
Material and methods. Patients of the main group were performed a SMILE surgery to correct myopia up to -10.0 diopters and myopic astigmatism up to -4.0 diopters (160 eyes - 80 patients). The study covered two control groups of patients, which were carried out LASIK (130 eyes, 65 patients) and photorefractive keratectomy PRK (100 eyes, 50 patients), respectively. The age of patients ranged from 18 to 44 years (28.9±4.9 years).
Results. The authors have shown that the ReLEx® SMILE is very effective refractive procedure in treating myopia and myopic astigmatism. A significant increase in uncorrected visual acuity was observed both after the SMILE surgery, as well as after the LASIK surgery. But after PRK, the rate of recovery of uncorrected visual acuity was significantly lower (p<0,01).
Key words: ReLEx® SMILE, myopia, LASIK, PRK.
