Purpose. To analyze the effectiveness of a complex two-stage treatment for partial optic nerve atrophy in children, depending on the method of drug therapy at the first stage of treatment.
Material and methods. In the course of work 317 children (376 eyes) aged from 8 months to 14 years with the diagnosis of partial optic nerve atrophy (PAN) were treated using a complex method. The complex two-stage method was used for the treatment of PRA: stage 1 – improvement of hemodynamics and trophic of the optic nerve and retina with the help of drug therapy, stage 2 – percutaneous electrical stimulation (PES) of the optic nerve.
Results. Results of treatment were analyzed during the first 6 months after treatment, in 1 year, in 2 years. The best positive result of treatment was obtained in the group of children who received drug therapy through the irrigation system into the tenon space, in 71.8% of cases, the gradient of visual acuity increase was 1.62. A more detailed study of the treatment results in this group revealed the dependence of positive results on the initial functional state of the visual analyzer. Children from the subgroup with initial visual acuity from 0.1 to 0.3 had the greatest positive dynamics according to all performed examinations. The positive effect after the complex two-stage treatment lasts up to 6 months in 77.5% of patients. In this regard, it is advisable to conduct maintenance courses of drug therapy and percutaneous electrical stimulation after 5–6 months. The positive therapeutic effect is stable.
Conclusions. The dynamics of visual acuity depends on the initial functional state of the visual analyzer in ALS and on the method of drug therapy.
Key words: optic nerve atrophy, irrigation therapy, percutaneous electrical stimulation, tenon space, retrobulbar space
