Purpose. Experimental and clinical rationales of possible formation of the loco-motor eyeball stump with a polytetra — fluorine — ethylene implant in posterior evisceration.
Material and methods. Rabbits — 20 eyes, 20 animals in which the safety of the studied method of loco-motor eyeball stump formation was assessed using bio-microscopy, as well as the definition of passive mobility of the stump and the results of histological studies. Follow-up: 1, 3 and 6 months. Patients — 30 eyes, 30 individuals who were evaluated according to the safety and effectiveness of the studied method of the loco-motor eyeball stump formation using biomicroscopy and the determination of stump mobility. Follow-up: from 6 to 72 months.
Results. According to biomicroscopy data all acute reactions to the surgery and the implant were completely resolved within 2 weeks. The results of light microscopy confirmed the biocompatibility of the polytetra — fluorine — ethylene implant in its application during posterior evisceration. Mobility of the formed loco-motor stump made up 146.6±3.2?. Mobility of the cosmetic artificial prosthesis, set on the created stump, was 120.9±2.1?. Mobility of intact eyes made up 148.2±2.8°.
Conclusion. The performed study proves the possibility of formation of the loco-motor eyeball stump with an polytetra — fluorine — ethylene implant in posterior evisceration, because such a tactics of surgical treatment of cosmetically defective blind eye is characterized by a safety, defined by a high biocompatibility of the material, and efficiency — the ability to ensure a good cosmetic result.
Key words: eyeball evisceration, ophthalmic implant, porous polytetra — fluorine — ethylene, loco-motor eyeball stump, ocular prosthetics.
