Experimental substantiation of photoinduced retinal vein branch occlusion model

Material and methods. The study was carried out in 10 rabbits (10 eyes). Chlorine photosensitizer (PS), 2.5 mg/kg, was used. Photodynamic influence was performed after intravenous injection of the PS by means of transpupillary laser irradiation of retinal vessels at exit on optic disk with a 662 nm wavelength and a 200 J/cm2 fluency.
Results. The ophthalmoscopical picture of branch retinal vein occlusion was already observed on the first day. Retinal edema of different intensity around the optic disk and in macula projection area was shown during the entire follow-up. Blood flow violation in damaged vessels was revealed by means of angiography, at 3 days — a complete absence of their contrasting, and later — dark retinal ischemia zones and microaneurysms formation. Morphological picture testified to the clot, which was like a natural clot at formation and structure.
Conclusion. The model application is perspective in creation of new treatment methods for thrombosis of retinal vein branches and also for a study of different matters of its pathogenesis.
