Intravitreal photodynamic therapy for experimental endophthalmitis

Purpose
To estimate an effectiveness of the intravitreal photodynamic therapy with chlorin e6 N- methyl-glucammonium salt for experimental endophthalmitis treatment.
Materials and methods
The study included an estimation of the antibacterial photodynamic therapy (APDT) effectiveness for Enterococcus faecium culture in vitro and for experimental endophthalmitis in rabbits (80 eyes of 40 animals) in vivo. All the rabbits were divided into four groups by 10 animals. I group was without treatment, in II group in 12 hours after Enterococcus faecium contamination a subtotal standard vitrectomy was performed, in III group vitrectomy was also performed, but with claforan, 16 mkg⁄ml, as irrigation solution, in IV group vitrectomy was combined with APDT. Microbiologic, clinical and morphological methods were used.
Results
APDT allowed to decrease significantly a vitreal contamination, a heaviness of the inflammatory and to stabilize the function of the neuroreceptor apparatus at early postoperative period. Gistological futures of the intraocular structures were much better after APDT combined with vitrectomy as compared with vitrectomy alone (р<0,005).
Conclusion
The next examination is necessarily to access the possibility of APDT for gram-negative and fungous experimental endophthalmitis and the safety of APDT for intraocular structures.
