    Historical aspects of iridocyclectomy for tumors of the iris and ciliary body: in memory of Professor Leonid F. Linnik

    Relevance. For a long time, enucleation was the only way to treat neoplasms of the iridociliary zone, the accumulated clinical experience allowed us to move on to organ-preserving treatment — surgical excision of the tumor (block excision). To date, block excision occupies a leading position in the treatment of tumors of the anterior segment of the eye.

    Purpos. To analyze domestic and foreign scientific literature devoted to the methods of surgical removal of neoplasms of the iridociliochoroidal zone, display the evolution, stages of development of approaches to block excision.

    Material and methods. A systematic selection and analysis of scientific publications of domestic and foreign authors on the resources of PubMed, Medline, eLIBRARY.RU, as well as dissertations and textbooks devoted to the methods of surgical removal of neoplasms of the iridociliochoroidal zone were carried out.

    Results. The article presents a historical view on the development of block excision of a tumor of the iridociliary zone. Various technologies and approaches to surgery are presented. Methods for increasing its effectiveness and safety, reducing the incidence of complications and ways to combat them are described.

    Conclusion. Block excision remains one of the main methods of treating patients with neoplasms of the iridociliary zone. Over time, techniques and surgical approaches have been modernized, and indications for surgery have expanded. Despite the many variations and approaches to tumor resection, there are still unresolved problems that require the creation of new technologies.
