Purpose. To study an efficiency of infrared diode laser radiation use in micro-pulse mode for treatment of central retinal pathology.
Material and methods. Within the study an analysis of the basic group of patients was performed using micro-pulse mode of infrared laser (810nm): 29 patients (38 eyes) with diabetic macular edema (DME); 33 patients (38 eyes) with age-related macular degeneration (AMD); as well as the control group of patients which underwent sub-threshold coagulation using the laser with a 532nm wavelength: 18 patients (20 eyes) with DME; 19 AMD patients (22 eyes). All patients were examined pre- and postoperatively: estimation of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) according to ETDRS Tables; determination of light sensitivity of central retinal zone using micro-perimetry; optical coherent tomography, fluorescein angiography, auto-fluorescence, ophthalmoscopy of retina, photo-registration of obtained results.
Results. In the course of study it was revealed that after treatment using micro-pulse mode of diode laser a disease regression with restoration of visual functions in a full volume was observed in the group of patients with a focal macular edema. The treatment using micro-pulse mode of diode laser was found uneffective in the group of patients with a diffuse long-term existed macular edema. After the micro-pulse effect by laser with the 810nm wavelength the visual function improvement was noted in AMD patients, any negative dynamics in course of disease was revealed in no case.
Conclusion. In follow-up of 12 months the obtained results indicate the efficacy and safety of micro-pulse mode use of laser effect with the 810nm wavelength in treatment of focal diabetic macular edema and initial forms of age-related macular degeneration.
Key words: diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration, micro-pulse mode, infrared diode laser, sub-threshold coagulation.
