Objective assessment of morphological changes in the retina in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) remains a relevant clinical task, particularly in the context of predicting disease course depending on the localization of retinal breaks. Digital processing of fundus images enables the acquisition of quantitative parameters, thereby improving the reproducibility of diagnostic evaluation.
Purpose. To quantitatively compare color intensity parameters of fundus images in RRD with superior and inferior break localization using RGB channel analysis.
A study included 57 patients with primary RRD. Standard color fundus photography was performed followed by image processing using ImageJ software. Regions of interest were defined, and the color intensity coefficient (CIC) was calculated for the red, green, and blue channels as well as for the integrated RGB model.
Higher CIC values were observed in all channels in cases of superior break localization compared with inferior localization. The most pronounced intergroup differences were detected in the blue channel.
In the subgroup with superior breaks, a negative correlation was found between R‑channel values and disease duration.
Quantitative RGB analysis of fundus images may serve as an additional tool for preoperative risk stratification and objective assessment in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
Keywords: rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, fundus imaging, superior retinal tears, inferior retinal tears.
