    Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a ubiquitous apicomplexan parasite of warm-blooded animals and is one of the most common parasitic zoonoses worldwide. This protozoan parasite was first identified in 1908 and formulated as a distinct entity a year later. The discovery of a test for specific antibodies to T. gondii, the Sabin-Feldman dye test, in 1948 established that T. gondii is a highly pathogenic parasite of warm-blooded hosts and has a worldwide distribution. In 2004,

    Montoya and Liesenfeld estimated that up to one-third of humanity is infected with T. gondii.

    There is considerable variation in the serologic prevalence of toxoplasmosis by geographic region. Studies on the prevalence of ocular toxoplasmosis are scarce. In addition, scientific studies conducted in different countries of the world have identified ocular toxoplasmosis as the most common form of posterior uveitis.
