The evaluation of the diagnostic significance of leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) in predicting the risk of development of sympathetic inflammation in trauma of the eye

The Helmholtz Moscow Research Institute of Eye Diseases, Moscow
Purpose. To determine the diagnostic significance of leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) by comparative evaluation of clinical and immunomorphological data.
Material and methods. A clinical group of 44 patients with posttraumatic uveitis on one of the eyes, as a result of trauma or the result of multiple surgical interventions, undergoing surgical treatment - removal of the eyeball by enucleation/evisceration in the Department of plastic surgery and eye prosthetics of the Institute of eye diseases is presented. Helmholtz for the period 2018.
Results. It was found that LMIT is sensitive only in 36.3% of cases. While histological examination of the material of the removed eyes revealed cases with a pronounced immune inflammation, in which the reaction of inhibition of leukocyte migration gave a negative result. And Vice versa – in cases of sensitization, even uveoretinitis tissue, the pathology report gave a description of a picture only degenerative and fibrotic changes.
Summary. To date, in determining the indications for preventive eye removal, an immunological test such as LMIT can perform only an auxiliary function. This immunological method makes it possible to only indirectly judge the presence or absence of autoimmune inflammation in the eye and is very doubtful in some cases.
Key words: sympathetic ophthalmia, posttraumatic uveitis, leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT), histological examination, trauma, inflammation, sensitization.
