The First Experience of the Use of Optic Coherent Tomography for Evaluation of Anatomo-Topographic Condition of Extraocular Muscles
Purpose
To study diagnostic capacity of optic coherent tomography using Visante OCT («Carl Zeiss Меditec») for evaluation of anatomo-topographic condition of EO muscles.
Material and methods
For the first time, to evaluate anatomotopographic condition of EO muscles we used the technology of optic coherent tomography by Visante OCT device. This method is intended for examination of the anterior eye segment. We examined 25 patients (50 eyes). Of those, 15 (27 eyes) were earlier operated on for different types of strabismus.
Results
In patients who had been subjected to surgery for strabismus, we managed to determine additionally the sites of attachment of resected and recessed muscles and primary sites of attachment of the latter.
Conclusions
1. Optic coherent tomography using the device Visante OCT («Carl Zeiss Меditec») is non-invasive, simple, and informative method to determine anatomo-topographic condition of EO muscles. It allows identification of attachment sites, interior and exterior borders of the limbus. In cases with operated strabismus, it helps to determine initial site of muscle attachment, degree of scars and adhesions.
2. Examination of EO muscles with Visante OCT («Carl Zeiss Меditec») is advisable in patients with previously operated strabismus as results of examination allow the surgeon to decide on tactic and volume of repeated surgery.
