   The results of surgical treatment of primary and recurrent pterygium using amniotic membrane and two-component autofibrin glue

   Purpose. Analysis of effectiveness of surgery treatment of primary and recurrent pterygium using a two-component autofibrin glue in comparison with suture fixation of amniotic membrane.

   Material and methods. A comparative analysis of the surgical treatment results was done between groups of patients with primary (21 eyes) and recurrent (14 eyes) pterygium using a two-component autofibrin glue and sutures for fixing the amniotic membrane. We evaluated the time spent on surgery, postoperative period duration and full epithelialization time. Each patient underwent biomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography of the anterior segment. Before operation and during control visits photo registration of anterior eye segment was done. The intensity of symptoms was evaluated in points of a visual analogue scale.

   Results. During our study we found statistically significant differences in duration of surgery, rehabilitation and epithelialization time, as well as the intensity of symptoms using a two-component autofibrin glue and sutures, which show benefits of glue fixation method. During 18-month observation after surgical treatment we fixed one case of recurrence in group of patients where the sutures were used.

   Conclusion. Plastic with amniotic membrane using two-component autofibrin glue in surgical treatment of primary and recurrent pterygium is effective, less traumatic and reduces operation and rehabilitation time. This allows us to give preference to the adhesive method of fixing the amniotic membrane.
