    Modern approaches to the treatment of patients with the initial stage of primary open-angle glaucoma

    Purpose. To analyze the scientific literature reflecting the main modern approaches in treatment of patients with the initial stage of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

    Material and methods. PubMed, eLIBRARY platforms for the period up to 2024 inclusive were used to search for sources of information on the given problem using key words: primary open-angle glaucoma, selective laser trabeculoplasty, medical treatment, hypotensive eye drops (and the same phrases in Russian).

    Results. This literature review presented modern data on the approaches to treatment of patients with initial stages of POAG, which allowed us to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each of the listed methods. According to the majority of modern studies ophthalmologists should strive for such a method of glaucoma treatment, which will preserve the patient’s quality of life, high compliance, while the treatment will be effective, safe and cost-effective.

    Conclusion. To date, the choice of the optimal method of treatment in patients with the initial stage of POAG remains an urgent problem in ophthalmology. There are different approaches to the treatment of such patients, among which are the use of topical therapy in the form of hypotensive drops and laser treatment methods.

    After analysis of the current approaches in the treatment of the initial stages of POAG worldwide and taking into account our own experience in the treatment of such patients, it is worth to mention promising opportunities for laser surgery as a first-line therapy in the treatment of the initial stages of POAG in the future.
