The main condition for preventing postoperative infectious complications is the realization of sufficient antiseptic measures.
The aim is to evaluate the influence of the method of surgical field treatment during PEC on the level of contamination of the surgical field and anterior chamber fluid (ACF).
Material and methods. The patients were divided into 3 groups: Group I (30 patients) — standard treatment, Group IA (15 patients) — standard treatment with mechanical eyelid delineation, Group II (30 patients) — with additional treatment with povidone iodine after blepharostat placement. Microbiologic material was collected before the intervention and at different stages of the operation from the conjunctival cavity (after standard treatment, after blepharostat installation, after additional treatment). Before completion of PEC, the level of contamination of the ACF was investigated. The isolated bacteria were identified by MALDI-TOF method, sensitivity was determined by disk-diffusion method.
Results. The highest occurrence at the preoperative stage was S.epidermidis. The percentage of S.epidermidis contamination of the operative field after eyelid extender placement was 33.33, 26 and 40 % in groups I, IA, II, respectively, in group II after additional treatment with povidone iodine — 6.6 %, in ACF it was found in 23.33, 13 and 0 % in groups I, IA, II, respectively Conclusion. Antiseptic measures in the volume of additional treatment with povidone iodine is the most effective technique that reduces S.epidermidis contamination of the intervention area and the only one in the study that ensures its absence in the ACF. Standard treatment with and without mechanical delineation is less effective and does not prevent S.epidermidis contamination of the ACF.
