Purpose. To compare the axial length values in silicone filled eyes and after its termination measured with «IOLMaster 500» and «Lenstar LS 900».
Material and methods. The axial length (AL) was measured in 44 eyes of 43 patients with silicone oil tamponade after surgical treatment of several vitreoretinal diseases. AL in eyes without silicone oil varied from 21.99 mm to 31.26 mm according to «IOLMaster 500» and from 21.96 mm to 31.42 mm according «Lenstar LS 900» biometry.
Results. All cases were divided into 2 groups: I group – eyes with AL less than 23.63 mm, and II group – eyes with AL more than 23.63 mm. In the group II disparity of AL in consecutive cases was 0,25±0,38 mm (р=0,010) for «IOLMaster 500» data and 0,17±0,44 mm (р=0,047) for «Lenstar LS 900» data. There was no significant differences in patients of I group.
Conclusions. AL measured in silicone filled eyes with optical biometry methods significantly overestimate the real values when it exceeds 23.63 mm. In case of simultaneous phacoemulsification with IOL implantation this error could lead to evident hypermetropic shift of postoperative refraction. «Lenstar LS 900» measurement error in silicon filled eyes is less than «IOLMaster 500» thus making the first biometry method preferable. In eyes with AL shorter than 23.63 mm, measurement difference was not reliable, thus the biometry accuracy in silicone oil filled «short» eyes becomes higher.
Key words: optical biometry; silicone filled eye; IOL power calculation. <
