National Ophthalmology Centre named after Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, Baku (Azerbaijan)
Purpose. To conduct comparative results of transepithelial cross-linking and traditional cross-linking with removal of the epithelium in patients with progressive keratoconus.
Material and methods. The research was conducted at excimer laser department of the National Ophthalmology Centre named after Academician Z. Aliyeva. Patients have been divided into two groups: the first group (37 patients) underwent cross-linking with removal of the epithelium, the second group (36 patients) had cross-linking without removal of corneal epithelium. The follow-up period lasted 1 year.
Results. According to the obtained clinical results it was proved that transepithelial corneal cross-linking is inefficient in terms of stabilizing the keratoconus progression. Thus, in spite of the soreness in postoperative period and a possibility of complications, we recommend performing a cross-linking surgery with removal of the epithelium in patients with progressive keratoconus.
