Tactics of vitreoretinal surgery for retinopathy of prematurity

    Purpose. To design vitreoretinal surgery technology in case of retinopathy of prematurity progressing after laser photocoagulation with a «horseshoe»-shaped or a «crater»-shaped retinal detachment.

    Material and methods.An early vitreoretinal surgery was performed in 36 patients (60 eyes) aged 8-12 weeks, who had a further progression of the disease with the formation of «horseshoe»-shaped (31eyes) and «crater»-shaped (29 eyes) retinal detachment 3-5 weeks after laser treatment for aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity.

    

    Results. Efficiency of treatment in cases of «horseshoe» retinal detachment was 93%, in cases of «crater»-shaped retinal detachment – 85%.

    Conclusions. In the course of the research we developed a technology of early lens sparing vitrectomy in case of «horseshoe» retinal detachment and «crater»-shaped retinal detachment in the retinopathy of prematurity progression after the laser treatment.
