Purpose. To study the use of ReLEx®SMILE operation for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism in patients aged 16-17 years.
Material and methods. The ReLEx® SMILE operation was performed in 36 eyes of 18 patients, 12 boys (66.7%) of them and 6 girls (33.3%) using the “VISUMAX” femtosecond laser platform (“Carl Zeiss Meditec”) to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism. The follow-up period was 6 months.
Results. The day after the ReLEx®SMILE the anterior segment of the eye looked calm and intact in all patients, the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) increased from 0.09± 0.06 to 1.10± 0.16 postoperatively 6 months later (p <0.001). The efficacy and safety indices at the end of the follow-up period were above 1.0.
Conclusion. The ReLEx®SMILE technology is a promising and modern method to correct myopia in patients starting aged 16–17 years, with a rapid recovery of UCVA and the absence of a superficial corneal flap.
Key words: femtosecond laser, VISUMAX, ReLEx® SMILE, lenticula, patients of 16-17 years old, myopia, incision, loss of vacuum.
